Tiong Bahru morning walk
Two and a half hours through the city's oldest housing estate, ending with coffee.
S$65 / person
What we do
The estate was built in the 1930s in the shape of an aeroplane, and the curved corners are the only part of that plan anyone still points at. We walk the blocks slowly, stop at the market that has traded since 1955, and finish in one of the coffee shops that survived the neighbourhood's second life as a bakery district.
Along the way: why the ground floor is always open, who painted the murals on the back walls, and which of the four coffee shops locals actually use.
Practical
- Meet at Tiong Bahru MRT, exit B, at 08:20.
- The market is busiest between 08:30 and 09:30 — that is deliberate.
- Coffee or tea included; breakfast is not, but there is time at the end.
